Nebo Board of Education 2005-2020

Randy has spent the past sixteen years on the Nebo Board of Education. During that time, Nebo has opened two new high schools, three junior high schools, and ten elementary schools. Current projects will add three middle schools and three replacement high schools on the current Bond.  Nebo has experienced tremendous growth. The District focus has been on student learning through a higher level of communication in Professional Learning Communities with grade level teams at the elementary level and content teams at the secondary level. Nebo has increased its focus on safe learning environments for our children. Working hard to implement Utah's Core Standards in Math and Literacy, Nebo continues to be committed to a curriculum that addresses the needs of the whole child.  Nebo has taken the lead in the State with comprehensive keyboarding instruction for all students at the elementary level, and has opened Nebo’s Advanced Learning Center for remarkable opportunities in cutting-edge secondary curriculum.

GAINS  (Growing Arts In Nebo Schools)

GAINS  (Growing Arts In Nebo Schools) is an effective program for Nebo children where the arts are championed as a part of a balanced curriculum. Nebo was awarded a generous grant from Beverley Taylor Sorenson's Legacy Foundation to support bringing “every art to every child.”  However, there are more children than there are resources. Because the visual and performing arts are some of the best tools for reaching and inspiring students, district arts leaders are focusing on these questions as they try their best to reach every child with a first class arts education:

  • How can we best explore potential alignments and shared objectives?

  • What collaborations and synergies are possible between us?

  • Can we create strategic plans to align state, business, education, community programs, and resources?

  • What are the desired outcomes?

  • Can we convene ongoing conversations to explore arts integration models with key stakeholders?

  • How can we combine our efforts to develop and implement a state-wide strategic plan for the placement of teaching artists in the schools, enabling every Utah child to experience more/all of the arts?

  • Are we utilizing what we know about systemic, sustainable models for change to ensure our success?

  • How can we tell our story? Who needs to hear it and in what sequence?

  • What initiatives will ensure that we are providing arts experiences for pre-service teachers that will equip them to succeed in the classroom?

  • How could we facilitate more arts education research with fine arts and education faculties?

  • Who has gathered relevant research? What are we measuring in our research, and are we measuring the right things? How will the data help us?

Balanced curriculum: FRAMEWORK

Randy has championed Nebo’s Framework Curriculum model, recommending and securing a new Associate Superintendent position to provide critical leadership and oversight. FRAMEWORK reviews every content area K-12 with an on-going rotational “deep dive” to ensure best practices, assessment realignment, professional development, and student learning data are regularly reviewed and adjusted.  Student academic success in career and technical education, literacy, math, physical education, science, social studies, world languages, health, and visual and performing arts as they are outlined in the Utah Core Standards will continue to be the focus of Nebo’s Academic Framework team. The objective of Nebo’s Framework is to increase the capacity of educators and the organization through giving the time, space, and resources to the development of a guaranteed and viable K-12 curriculum.  (See content area details using the button below).

The thorough attention that Nebo School District has given to the professional development for teachers in rolling out Utah's Core Standards is an example for the entire state. Emerging core standards in the arts (music, dance, theatre, visual arts, media arts) have been written for Utah, and have now been adapted by Nebo’s arts team for elementary teachers (see Nebo Core Essentials). We must be informed, well-read, and careful as we analyze and adopt standards in all content areas for our children. We are committed to helping them become confident, well-educated, competent in 21st century skills, and ready to succeed in a rapidly changing world.
